How should you audit behaviour and culture? As an auditor, what should I pay attention to and what should I not pay attention to?

This course will teach you how to scale a safety culture based on the Safety Culture Ladder as an auditor. You will train your observation techniques with the help of practical exercises, practice reporting and presenting results, and discover which soft skills you need (and perhaps need to develop further) to be able to audit on the SCL 2.0.

This training is intended for:

Auditors from certifying bodies, such as system auditors (ISO45001, VCA, etc.), who are to conduct audits on the Safety Culture Ladder.
Internal auditors who are responsible within the company and want to have their company (possibly) certified.

Result

After completing the training, you will have gained sufficient knowledge of the business aspects of the Safety Culture Ladder. An auditor is not automatically qualified after following this training because this training is only one part of the qualification criteria.

Knowledge needed for this traning

Basic knowledge of the Safety Culture Ladder is a requirement, as opposed to experience with auditing culture and the associated cultural aspects.

Programme

Introduction to safety culture:

  • What is safety culture?
  • The role of attitude and behaviour in culture and audits
  • The differences between preconditions and behaviour
  • Examples of visible safety culture and how you can assess it
  • Differences between system audits and culture audits

Practical exercises

The practical exercises are based on the business aspects of the Safety Ladder.

For each business aspect, a requirement from the standard has been selected and elaborated. In the game situation with an actor, the course participants carry out an audit based on observations and interviews. The actors will be interviewed from different roles. After each round, there will be feedback and a discussion of the learning points.
